Academy

ACADEMY

We strive to develop players with basic soccer skills who also have a solid foundation of basic soccer decision-making. Accomplishing this goal creates players with the foundation necessary to compete at the next level of play.

Our academy program for U8 and U9 plays in a semi local league put together by Auburn, Opelika and FCM called AMO. This league allows us to reduce travel time, have home games, and provide a positive environment between clubs just like us. Our mission is to provide a developmentally appropriate soccer environment for kids to make developmental improvements as soccer players, have fun and return next year.

Our U10 and U11 academy teams will also play in the AMO Local league but will also travel to Birmingham and Atlanta for more competitive games. Just as above, our mission is to place our teams in developmentally appropriate soccer environments.

We strive to make our league safe while allowing techniques and tools to be used by our coaches to make sure inappropriate match ups are adjusted mid game when suitable. Please review our competition safe guarding Tools and Techniques below.

The Academy has a rolling enrollment throughout the fall and spring so your son or daughter can join at any time. For more information, contact Jarrett Little at JarrettLittle@auburnsoccerclub.com

  • WHAT IS ACADEMY?

Academy is the core, middle league of our Auburn Soccer Club. It is for the U6-U11 age groups. Teams have professional coaches and train 2 days a week for 1 hour to 90 minutes. Players in our Academy program then go into the Select Program in the U12 Age group.

  • WHAT IS THE ACADEMY PHILOSOPHY?

The ASC Academy Program philosophy is to emphasize player development over team development, focusing on the technical development of each child without the pressures of short-term wins, loses or results.

  • HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE TO BE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ASC ACADEMY SYSTEM?

Your child must have been born between the years 2016-2013, for Fall 2023-Spring 2024.

  • HOW DOES MY CHILD GET INTO THE ASC ACADEMY SYSTEM?

Evaluations are in May but we have a rolling season which means anyone can join at any time. We allow midseason evaluations for anyone interested.

  • HOW IS THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE STRUCTURED?

ASC will practice with Monday and Wednesday nights or Tuesday and Thursday nights. We work to keep academy session for the early time slots starting at 4:30 or 5:00 pm. Academy teams will participate in tournaments and league play held through the state. Tournaments are team based and league games put together by our academy director.

  • WHO WILL ASC ACADEMY TEAMS PLAY?

ASC Academy teams will compete against academy teams from other clubs in the local area.

  • HOW FAR WILL WE HAVE TO TRAVEL?

Travel is kept to a minimum for U9 and under, with most games taking place within the Auburn/Opelika/Montgomery area, but there may be occasions where you are required to travel beyond that for tournaments or other competition.

  • WHEN WE WILL KNOW THE SCHEDULE OF GAMES?

ASC Academy teams competes in the AMO, games typically start beginning of August. Once schedules are released, they will be sent out to families.

  • HAVE ALL OF THE SOCCER CLUBS IN ALABAMA ADOPTED THE “ACADEMY” PHILOSOPHY?

Yes. In accordance with the recommendations by U.S. Youth Soccer, most of the clubs have now adopted the academy style philosophy.

  • WHY NOT KEEP LEAGUES OR STANDINGS? DOESN’T THIS DILUTE THE COMPETITION?

The standings usually matter more to the parents than they do the players. At ASC Academy we feel that whenever we compete against another club or even amongst other academy teams in our own club, the game will be competitive and both teams desire to win the game. We don’t want to put the younger players in situations where winning is the be all and end all. If this is the case players play with a fear-based mentality rather than a creative mentality.

  • WILL ASC ACADEMY TEAMS ENTER TOURNAMENTS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON?

Academy teams will enter tournaments throughout the year. The club sets these tournaments to ensure that families are not traveling to multiple locations in a weekend. We try to keep all tournaments in the same place therefore set them beforehand. Coaches are allowed to schedule outside of the set tournaments if they deem necessary but teams will have to pay for any other tournaments, they participate in outside of the allotted club tournaments that are set.

  • WHEN DOES THE ATSC ACADEMY SEASON START AND FINISH?

Evaluations for Academy are in May and we will offer our academy players optional summer training sessions. Our season officially begins the first week of August and goes until mid-December. We start back up in January after the holiday break and continue through May with new evaluations.
